Today, lawmakers in the Senate moved to include $1.6 billion in the FY 2018 Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill to expand a wall along the U.S. – Mexico border, a project that neglects the real needs of border communities and imposes heavy environmental damage.
The following statement is from Raul Garcia, Earthjustice legislative counsel:
“Republican leadership seems determined to promote senseless policies and scaremongering. A border wall is a boondoggle idea that harms the most vulnerable communities and their environment. This pointless wall project wastes billions of dollars that could be used to revitalize counties on the southern border, a region with a poverty rate about twice as high as the national average. We urge Senate Republicans to forgo irrational projects, and to tackle real issues with real solutions.”
